Is Car Racing A Sport Biography
Auto Racing is NOT a Sport people think that auto racing isn't a sport for many reasons. They think that because auto racing doesn't require as much effort, it isn't a sport because, after all, everybody can drive, right? The car does the work. Also, difference in the car, not the driver, decides most of the races. Most tracks require the driver to do is go straight, brake, turn left, repeat. And you get breaks during cautions! Drivers don't do as much work inside the car as a soccer player would or a sprinter would. Braking and accelerating isn't hard, and steering is easy. All you do is go fast, avoid crashing, pit, and go fast to win. Not too hard to do! Racing IS a Sport racing fans know that racing is a tradition. Drivers succeed each other for generations. Families take pride in their racing history. So, many fans are biased to think that auto racing isn't just a sport, it's one of the best, if not The Best, sport in the world. Fans think that racing is a sport because drivers have to go into that tiny turn at speeds of more than 175 mph. It takes concentration to do everything on the track for over three hours straight. With cars hurtling around them, driving a race car takes mettle. Consider Martinsville, a track on the NASCAR circuit. It's paperclip shape practically begs for hitting the wall. Drivers are in danger of seriously damaging their cars for 500 straight laps. 500 laps! Drivers have to brake over 1000 times during the race. Fans think, if that doesn't take skill, what does? There is a fine line between success and failure. Strategy is a big factor in the "sport". Crew chiefs and drivers must agree on what to do during a late caution. Stay out, four tires, two tires, or gas n' go? Also, NASCAR drivers spend 3 hours desperately steering, accelerating, and braking in a car that reaches 120°F.
